Climate change requires joint and coordinated action from humankind. For this to happen, we need a global administration. However, not only is a capable global administration completely absent, it even seems “unthinkable” that such a structure could be formed. The media is full of good vibes about environmentalism and ecology, but nevertheless, we are heading towards doomsday.
In his sci-fi publication, “THE MINISTRY FOR THE FUTURE”, Kim Robertson asks: Why is global administration “unthinkable”? What hinders us to think in this direction? Who is resisting and why? How can this resistance be overcome? Why is climate protest so peaceful? Is this peacefulness justifiable? Why are reactions to peaceful climate protest so violent? — And further: Why don’t we use electronic surveillance systems to control the fossil fuel industry, despite being so good at using surveillance technology in other circumstances? Why do we avoid the thought of geo-engineering even though we do this all the time? Could it be that global administration is in a stage of pre-consciousness? That we are in the last stage of a horror dream, from which we struggle to wake up? In short: Why are we not capable of thinking of administration in an holistic way?
Thus far there is no general science of administration; all we have are some primitive national attempts. And, no, the liberal attitude to dismiss all administration as inefficient does not really help us understand administration. Kim Robinson offers a vision of how a global administration, capable of tackling our problems, could come into being. He suggests an alliance between an infant global administration and violent youth action.
The Flying accounting University is dedicated to teach accounting as a social science and bound to the principles of the founders, which is to develop the social and ecological dimension of accounting. We will review Robertson’s important book on this topic – “one of Barack Obama’s favourite books of the year”. It goes without saying that the point of view of Mr. Robinson does not necessarily represent the views of the reviewers.
