Event Description

Allocation of shared costs in not-for-profits can be a challenging exercise.  Not only are there alternative models available for the cost allocation process, but also donor organisations sometimes have strong opinions, or can even dictate which model may be used by the beneficiary organisation or set limitations.

Topics to be covered include:

  • What are the benefits of a cost allocation policy?
  • Functional vs. natural classification of expenses
  • Cost categories: management & administration, program, fundraising, Board development
  • What approaches of cost allocation are acceptable?
  • What should be the main contents of a cost allocation policy?
  • Linking the cost allocation policy to meaningful financial statements
  • Implementing the cost allocation policy and preparing the client for negotiations with donor

Join us to learn from Thomas Werner, the voice of practice experience in this area, and prepare yourself to advise clients  how to navigate this sometimes fraught and controversial area of non profit accounting.
